Biomass refers to sustainable fuels such as wood chips or wood pellets which can deliver the heating requirements to a building at a significant reduction in net carbon emissions when compared with fossil fuels. Although these fuels release CO2 when burning, the CO2 is balanced by the amount absorbed when growing.

Biomass fuels are sustainable if managed on a sustainable basis. Biomass is harvested as part of a constantly replenished crop, with the new growth absorbing CO2.
