  • Ground Source Heat Pumps

    Ground source heat pumps draw heat from the ground and then use that to generate more heat to warm your building. Unlike air source heat pumps, ground source or geothermal heat pumps are not as reliant upon the ambient temperature to maintain a high efficiency. From 1 metre below the surface, ground temperature is typically between 7⁰C and 12⁰C throughout the year.

    To extract the heat from the ground a number of methods can be used, pipe coils laid in the ground, bore holes drilled vertically into the ground or pipe coils can even be laid on the bed of a lake.

    Classed as a low carbon technology due to the fact that they can produce over 4 times the amount of heat energy than it takes to power the unit, ground source heat pumps are eligible for the RHI. RHI, or the Renewable Heat Incentive is a Government environmental programme that provides financial incentives to increase the uptake of renewable heat. Simply, for the non-domestic sector it provides a subsidy, payable for 20 years to encourage the installation of renewable heat generating technologies.

    Ground Source Heat Pumps Case Study

    The Client

    Shibden Hall and Park are located near Halifax in Yorkshire, they date back to 1420. It became a public park in the 1920s when it was donated to the people of Halifax.

    The Challenge

    As part of a multi-million pound restoration project of the historic Hall & Park, a new learning centre called Shibden Mereside, was to be built to house a café and a range of versatile function rooms.

    Kimpton Energy Solutions were contracted to provide the heating, ventilation and plumbing services to the new-build and the refurbishment of the outbuildings throughout the park.

    The Solution

    Heating throughout the building is sourced from the low grade energy source of ground loop ‘slinkies’ buried in the banking to the rear of the building which are interconnected to a Dimplex Fighter 24 water to water heat pump. The heat pump increases the water temperature for both heating and hot water purposes, circulating heating water temperature at 43°C to serve 3 underfloor heating manifolds with loops closely centred at 75cm.

    The building benefits from an all glazed east facing elevation to allow the sun to assist with the heating of the building in the morning and a Trend Control System to open and close high level windows and low level vents to promote natural ventilation for thermal comfort during the summer.

    The Plaza is a showpiece building for Bruntwood in Liverpool and we have since made it our own headquarters in the city. To reflect this, we needed to ensure that the fit out was of the highest quality, whilst maintaining the high levels of service our tenants expect from Bruntwood.
