Latest Award maintains Kimpton’s proud apprenticeship traditions
A Wirral-based company has maintained its long tradition of producing award-winning engineering apprentices with Tom Barwise named the North West’s Heating & Ventilating Installer of the Year at the Heating and Ventilating Contractors’ Association (HVCA) regional awards.
The 19-year-old from Meols on the Wirral joined Kimpton as an apprentice installer just over a year ago and as well as developing hands-on skills in the installation of central heating and air conditioning systems, he is being trained at Liverpool Community College.
It was in the College’s annual Construction Awards that Tom won the Rose Bowl for Heating & Ventilating Fitting, making him eligible to enter the HVCA Regional Awards, for which the ceremony was held last week at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton.
Tom’s success maintains Kimpton’s outstanding track record in producing high quality apprentices. Last year his colleague, Stephen Loughran won the same Regional Award and in 2005 Chris Tolley went one step further winning a National Award. Both these men, together with two other former National Apprentice of the Year winners, Wayne Doherty and Phillip Morgan, all still work at Kimpton, indicative of the company’s excellent staff retention record.
Kimpton’s managing director, Richard Kimpton commented: "From the first day Tom joined our company I have received excellent reviews from his mentors and peers alike and it is no surprise he has won this award within his first year with us. He is a model employee and we are delighted to have him on board, maintaining our proud record of producing high quality, award-winning apprentices."
Kimpton has one of the most successful apprenticeship schemes of any engineering firm in the North West, taking on three or four new apprentices each year and investing heavily in ongoing staff training and development programmes. As Tom’s latest success exemplifies, it is a policy that continues to reap rich rewards in terms of industry award success but also, crucially, in maintaining a stable and highly skilled workforce.
