Case Study: Westminster Children’s Centre, Ellesmere Port
The Client
One such facility is the new Westminster & Rossmore Children’s Centre in Ellesmere Port, a ‘one stop shop’ for young children and their families in the Westminster, Rossmore, Rivacre, Hooton and Childer Thornton areas of the town. Sharing the site of Westminster Community Primary School, the centre accommodates a full time health visitor and offers childcare, health and family support services from one central base.
There are also adult learning opportunities, advice on benefits, parenting skills groups, speech and language support and midwifery services all available from the Centre.
The Project
A multi-phased project carried out by Cheshire County Council’s approved construction partner, Conlon Construction, the work involved the refurbishment of three surplus classrooms in the existing school building and the addition of a brand new extension comprising reception area, consulting rooms and office space.
The project required the full range of building services support and Conlon turned to one of its preferred sub-contract partners, Kimpton Building Services, to carry out all mechanical services installation.
Being a live school site, all work had to be completed within a very tight project schedule and with health and safety a critical consideration.
The Solution
Because many of the school pupils were being housed in temporary classroom accommodation on the site, speed was of the essence and so a combination of refurbishment and new build work was carried out simultaneously for maximum efficiency and minimal disruption.
Kimpton Building Services was responsible for the installation of all mechanical services including, heating and ventilation, gas services, domestic hot water provision, above ground drainage and sanitaryware specification and overall control of the Centre’s Building Management System.
The new Children’s Centre was officially handed over to Cheshire County Council on schedule, within budget and to an impressive level of specification that the Council will aim to replicate throughout the county’s ongoing Sure Start nursery education programme.
