Birkenshaw Training Centre
With the aid of a £2m government investment West Yorkshire Fire
and Rescue Service were able to build a state of the art Urban
Search & Rescue training centre at their Birkenshaw site. A
critical part of the training programme for fire fighters is to be
able to operate in densely smoke filled rooms. WYFRS called on the
expertise of Kimpton to install the high specification smoke
clearance system required to evacuate the smoke from the simulation
building.
An array of high temperature, heavyweight galvanised ducts
couple the numerous stainless steel smoke collection canopies to a
high pressure extract fan. The smoke filled air is extracted to
atmosphere via a 20m high vertical discharge stack to comply with
the Clean Air directive of the HSE.
Fire Stations
On the back of the successful installation carried out at
Birkenshaw, WYFRS elevated Kimpton onto their nominated supplier
list.
Kimpton have a long track record for the removal and replacement
of commercial and industrial heating systems and have been
appointed to carryout heating and hot water plant replacement
schemes at Hunslet, Morley and Featherstone Fire Stations.
These schemes involved various activities including the removal
and replacement of the existing LPHW boiler plants and hot water
systems, installing new WC extract ventilation systems and in
certain areas providing heating and cooling air conditioning
systems.
The Hunslet Fire Station also enjoys the benefit of reduced
energy consumption following the installation by Kimpton of Solar
Thermal panels. The low carbon technology provides the heating for
the domestic hot water services within the station.
